Blogger Play

Here is an amazing little tool recently posted by the Blogger team.

Blogger Play - It's a constant feed of all photos being uploaded to all Blogger blogs. Check it out for photo inspiration, etc. It is oddly hypnotizing. PW

Here's how the Blogger team describes it:

Blogger Play: Watch the blogs go by

Today we’re pleased to launch Blogger Play, a neat little toy we’ve cooked up to show you photos and blog posts as you’ve never seen them before.

Shortly after Blogger launched photo uploading two years ago, one of our engineers whipped up a web page that would show us the pictures that were being uploaded in real time. The result was fun, often beautiful, but above all, compelling. We couldn’t stop watching.

Over the years we’ve kept this photo scroller as part of the Blogger offices, on a monitor or projector, as an interesting (distracting?) slideshow, and a reminder of the diversity and vivaciousness of Blogger blogs. The fame of the scroller spread within Google, until one day we were asked, “so, when are you launching this?”

“Um...,” we replied. But we knew a good idea when we heard one. We got our UI people to come up with buttons and fadey effects and we got our engineers to make the whole thing fast and robust. A bit of work later, and now we can share it with all of you:

http://play.blogger.com/

Blogger Play will show you a never-ending stream of images that were just uploaded to public Blogger blogs. You can click the image to be taken directly to the blog post it was uploaded to, or click “show info” to see an overlay with the post title, a snippet of the body, and some profile information about the blogger who uploaded it. We also wrote a Blogger Play FAQ with more information.

A caveat: we use many techniques, including Google’s SafeSearch technology, to keep the images clean. Nevertheless, on rare occasions an image that you may find vulgar or obscene will slip through our algorithmic filters. Google does not pre-screen the images that appear in Blogger Play, nor is it responsible for their content. To report a terms of service violation, you may fill out this contact form.

Work Party on Saturday Sept. 8, 2007

It was a soggy but productive day. The rain hadn't started when we arrived at 9:00am. A gentle sprinkle so started that increased in intensity through the day. Much was accomplished. The upgraded power line was run to "Trailer Row", the docks were pulled, the clubhouse was painted, and the rear of the clubhouse was lifted. We were thoroughly wet and muddy by the end of the day. Thanks to all for organizing and participating and for the end of work day beverages!

2007 Governor's Cup

Robin Rader Wins 2007 Governor’s Cup

While visiting from Fairbanks, Robin Rader showed how you can rinse off an old Skipjack (Robin R. updates - only correction I would make to the story is that we never rinsed off the boat. Actually I think the slime might have helped the boat go faster.), recall sailing skills from over 20 years ago, select a family member (I not only enlisted the help of my family as crew but managed to rope Skyler (Kevin and Dawn's boy) into the fray.) as victim, er crew, and show us Big Lake sailors how it should be done.

It turns out Robin was an ASC member in the 1970s. His dream was to win the Governor’s Cup, but try as he might, there was a sailor named Steve Ryan that he just couldn’t seem to beat. If you study the names on the Governor’s Cup you’ll find Steve Ryan won the cup seven times – 1969, 1971, 73, 74, 75, 77 and 78. That could discourage a fellow!

Now, Robin has won the cup and his name will finally take its place alongside his old nemesis. The rest of the story involves some great racing conditions (actual wind), a record number of boats competing, no rain, a great band, great food, fireworks and great company.

For race scoring, the old Excel spreadsheet, which worked fine for a fleet you could count on one hand, is starting to become cumbersome. Next year we’ll be evaluating Sailwave software for score keeping. It’s used by the majority of sailing organizations and it’s free!

The race committee also spent a lot of time discussing the correct way to score missed races and failed to finish races. It had never really been an issue before as no cup contenders had failed to finish or miss a race. This year Robin missed a race (we may have forgotten to hail him) and Tim suffered a main halyard failure. Just like in the America’s Cup, equipment failures can cause you to lose a race, but not doom you for the series.

Our solution for Sunday night was very close to the ISAF Appendix A, Low Point System. Now home with book in hand, I’ve updated the figures to reflect this. There are minor changes to some total point scores from what is in the club log book, but not enough to change the standings themselves.

See Troy’s cool photos below this posting.

Detailed standings and race results to follow.

DNC (DID NOT COME TO START AREA - DID NOT RACE FOR ANY REASON) = NO. OF BOATS THAT STARTED + 1

DNF (DID NOT FINISH THE RACE) = NO. OF BOATS THAT FINISHED + 1
