Rick White RIP
I didn't realize Rick passed away a couple of years
ago. We attended on of his sailing seminars in Islamorada, Florida in 2008 and I've read all his books. Quite the interesting life, well lived!
Rick White, born April 4, 1937, passed away on January 11, 2017 at Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, Florida after a brief and unexpected battle with non-small-cell lung cancer.
He is best known in the multi hull sailing world for his many racing championships, his books and his race-training seminars. But there is so much more.
As a pre-teen he was a champion swimmer doing the butterfly stroke. And as a teenager he started driving trucks at age 14. His father told him to just blend in with the traffic, no faster or slower than the rest.
In high school he was an all-state football player being recruited by numerous colleges. He picked North Carolina, but he broke his neck during the first year, ending that potential career.
After several years as a successful trucking company owner, he sold that and gave up the suits and ties to become a singer-songwriter-entertainer.
His greatest passion was motocross racing. And he even built a track that hosted many motocross championships.
Lived in Vail, Colorado for eight years, where he was an expert powder-hound skier besides being an entertainer. For one summer out there, he worked as a river raft guide on the Colorado River.
He was an airplane pilot (only crashed once) and for boats he had a 500-ton masters license. He worked for several years as a captain taking groups of people on week-long sailing tours of the Bahamas.
In recent years he has been spending his summers at Put-in-Bay, OH, and his winters in Key Largo, FL.
Rick is survived by his wife Mary Wells, his son David White of Key Largo, FL, his daughter Michelle Coyle of Barberton, OH, his brother William White of Plantation, FL".

2017 Governor's Cup Results
The 2017 Governor's Cup results are here...
Ten small boats participated over the two day regatta.
Racing was very competitive with small spreads in corrected times and several changes in the top three slots over the course of the regatta. We even had an exact corrected time tie in one race.
Congratulations to winners Dave Johnson and Elayne Hunter! Good luck at the North American!
Special thanks to Addy Wright for another excellent RC job under chilly conditions and Vice Commodore Bruce Lee for keeping us all organized.

2017 Firecracker Regatta
For the first time we've separated the mighty Buccaneer Fleet from the rest of the pack.
The linked score sheet here shows separate fleets for Buccaneer, Open and Big Boats.
Saturday racing was sporty, but Sunday brought continuous rain and zero wind.

Work Party Saturday May 30th !
Good morning Sailors
The look of the Sailing club has changed a bit from your last visit.
We will not be able to completely open the club until the landscaping is finished. But we have a large list of activities that need to be done on Saturday.
Rough list is—not in order
- Build ramps/platform for hoist
- Backfill in hoist area
- Put out docks/ reinstall stiff arms and hardware
- Dock repair (separate list)
- Finish chain hoist install
- Prepare site for Coir Logs
- Reinstall water pump
- Reinstall ramp to dock- one only at this time
- Club house cleanup—mud issue
- Boat prep for sailing classes
- Launch pontoon boat once cleaned
- ETC
Members need to bring
- Garden gloves
- Shovels
- Racks
- Landscape rakes
- Wheel barrow
- A pick or Maalox
- And your strong backs
- Boots
A pile driving crew will be on site early Saturday—please give them room to work—and room for their equipment.
Parking may be an issue—want cars in upper section of club only
Also need a truck for dump run by days end-
The shoreline and grounds landscaping work will start next week-
I may need some volunteers mid week—know soon.
Please make all recommendations for landscaping and site improvements to the Site Committee
Cheers
Bruce
