We would like to thank all the folks that showed up and our new friend Dennis who provided the boats. With any luck we will get out again this winter. Technology Committee Update - Sailwave Sailing Scoring Software

As promised, we are implementing Sailwave Sailing Scoring Software for the 2008 racing season. This will provide a robust and easy to use system for recording, calculating and posting race results. It also provides the option to use different handicap systems and wind indexed ratings as well as different scoring systems, e.g. .75 pts for 1st place vs. 1.00 pts for 1st place.

Any member can tinker around with Sailwave. Just download the free software. The Portsmouth tables and our race files are contained in small, separate files that are easily emailed.

For a trial I've entered the last two races of the 2007 Governor's Cup (no big boat data entered yet). And yes, it will show crew as well. You can see the test results here:

ASC Test Results using D-PN ratings
This sheet gives exactly the same corrected times we've been generating using our Excel template, but data entry and results are both faster and easier. We can even post to the web right after the race.

ASC Test Results using Wind Indexed Ratings
This sheet uses the same elapsed times, but includes an additional correction based on wind speed ranges. To use this we'll need a handheld wind meter, at least two wind readings during each race and complete Portsmouth ratings for each boat. For some boats (like the RL) there are no additional ratings available for all the wind speed ranges.

If you print out and study these two sheets you'll find the differences in Race 6 results in the USPN and Corrected Time columns.

Soft water is just around the corner!

Racing Crew Need / Want List - Governor's Cup Regatta

The Race Committee is off and running for the 2008 sailing season.

One item from today's meeting was a suggestion for a Racing Crew Need / Want List. I'll start this one off with a suggested format. Feel free to change as needed. The samples will be marked as such. Since we can't edit previous posts (other than our own) the best way is to post continuous comments to this original post.

We'll break it up into the various regattas to keep each list manageable and easier to read and search.

Blogger Play

Here is an amazing little tool recently posted by the Blogger team.

Blogger Play - It's a constant feed of all photos being uploaded to all Blogger blogs. Check it out for photo inspiration, etc. It is oddly hypnotizing. PW

Here's how the Blogger team describes it:

Blogger Play: Watch the blogs go by

Today we’re pleased to launch Blogger Play, a neat little toy we’ve cooked up to show you photos and blog posts as you’ve never seen them before.

Shortly after Blogger launched photo uploading two years ago, one of our engineers whipped up a web page that would show us the pictures that were being uploaded in real time. The result was fun, often beautiful, but above all, compelling. We couldn’t stop watching.

Over the years we’ve kept this photo scroller as part of the Blogger offices, on a monitor or projector, as an interesting (distracting?) slideshow, and a reminder of the diversity and vivaciousness of Blogger blogs. The fame of the scroller spread within Google, until one day we were asked, “so, when are you launching this?”

“Um...,” we replied. But we knew a good idea when we heard one. We got our UI people to come up with buttons and fadey effects and we got our engineers to make the whole thing fast and robust. A bit of work later, and now we can share it with all of you:

http://play.blogger.com/

Blogger Play will show you a never-ending stream of images that were just uploaded to public Blogger blogs. You can click the image to be taken directly to the blog post it was uploaded to, or click “show info” to see an overlay with the post title, a snippet of the body, and some profile information about the blogger who uploaded it. We also wrote a Blogger Play FAQ with more information.

A caveat: we use many techniques, including Google’s SafeSearch technology, to keep the images clean. Nevertheless, on rare occasions an image that you may find vulgar or obscene will slip through our algorithmic filters. Google does not pre-screen the images that appear in Blogger Play, nor is it responsible for their content. To report a terms of service violation, you may fill out this contact form.

Work Party on Saturday Sept. 8, 2007

It was a soggy but productive day. The rain hadn't started when we arrived at 9:00am. A gentle sprinkle so started that increased in intensity through the day. Much was accomplished. The upgraded power line was run to "Trailer Row", the docks were pulled, the clubhouse was painted, and the rear of the clubhouse was lifted. We were thoroughly wet and muddy by the end of the day. Thanks to all for organizing and participating and for the end of work day beverages!
