Fun Factoid - a winged sail puts less stress on the boat than a soft sail, while generating more power. Thus you can make the boat lighter - hence FASTER!

Get Ready for the Firecracker Regatta and Family Fun Day

Wooden Boats (pickup materials on Friday, July 1st)
We are going to have the wooden boat competition again this year. The boats will be similar to last years design; 12' x 3.5" piece of wood (we will supply the wood). It comes with a 3/16" dowel that is almost 12" tall for the mast.

You can make your own sail out of any material. The rules allow you to add a rudder, centerboard or whatever else might make your boat faster (no motors). You can also paint your boat.

This year we will be doing a few different heats so we don't put so many people on the docks at the same time. We will pass out the boat and mast on Friday, July 1st and the races will be start around 11:00 on the 2nd.

July 2nd Saturday
Races - 9:30 (little kids, big kids, adult, family)
Sprint
Relay
Sack races (two people to a sack)
Kid water relay will be after the wooden boat races (inflatable boats, canoe, Laser, swimming).

Hay Scramble (each family should try to bring $3 in change per kid, if possible, if not, please join the fun anyway)
This might be in the afternoon after the Firecracker Regatta starts or in between racing. Additional change from other club members would be great. I will supply other prizes to sprinkle in the hay.

Depending on interest we could do some other games and or races (such as an adult water relay). These games are fun for everyone (whether you play or watch), bring your kids and your grandkids and join us for a great day of family fun.

We will have a BBQ in the evening; hot-dogs and hamburgers. Please bring salads, appetizers, dessert or drinks. For questions, suggestions or to volunteer, use club email.

Another big Thank You, to all those that turned out for the second work party. We got the docks launched and connected to land. Grounds clean up and trash in a central location, waiting for someone with a trailer to remove.
For those of you that have time this week, the trash needs to be removed.
The Dock bumper project started by Geoff needs to be continued, look at the dock nearest the hoist and continue on.
We didn't get to setup the tents and tables which can be done next Friday.

PLEASE NOTE: Hazard to navigation, the end of the lakeward dock arm is tied to bouy #128. The rope is just under the surface. This is a temporary measure and will be rectified ASAP.

We got a good start on the on the grounds cleanup, Skipjack rigging and dock refurbishment. There are still some docks to do, plus launching them which we will do at the next work party.

A big "Thank You" to all those who participated. Hope to see as many at the next on on the 21st. We particularly need strong backs to get the docks in the water.

PW - Here's a link to the last Wet Wednesday Race of the season (previously omitted from the blog).

PW - 2010 Sailing Season overall results for the Dave Johnson Cup and the Robar Cup are here. Scoring format is high score wins, with points awarded to correspond with the number of boats in each regatta. I.e. ten boats raced, winner gets 10 points, second place gets 9 points, etc. Tie breaks are per Appendix A.

And Geoff presented the Above and Beyond awards.
The recipients were:

George Tolly, Rick Gilmore and Keith Barton for keeping our club in one piece during the fall wind storm.

Free Boating Safety Course

The Alaska Office of Boating Safety will be offering Alaska Water Wise, a boating course designed for Alaskans on December 11, 2010 from 9 - 6 in the Atwood Building on 550 West 7th Avenue in Anchorage. Segments include pre-departure preparation, boating operations, boating emergencies, cold-water survival, navigation/rules of the road, and legal requirements. Students who attend all sessions, and pass the written exam and skills will be issued a course completion certificate. The course is free but pre-registration is encouraged. Everyone is so sorry to hear about the damage to Keith, Bruce & Tina, and George's boats. George lost his motor and has hull damage. Of course we have all heard that Keith's and the Lelonde's boats were severly damaged. Hopefully George will find his motor and repairs will allow everyone to sail next season.

The RL was damaged as well. It has a large area that will need to be removed. It is very soft and there is question if she is even worth fixing? Careful consideration will be given to the problem and no quick decisions will be made. The pontoon boat will need to have work as well. The most alarming problem is the severe shoreline erosion. I will post additional photos of that and the docks.

I gave Paul the wrong information. In the results of the Frostbite Regatta the skipper of 2838 was incorrectly identified as Dawn Aumann when in fact the skipper was Tom Harrison.

It should be noted in the scratch challenge held later in the day, involving Bucs 5262, 5263 and 2838. Dawn Auman did in fact skipper 2838 to second place ahead of 5263.

With the help of Bruce and Tina LaLonde, 2 scouts were able to complete the last steps needed for their Sailing Merit Badge. Both boys are very close to their Eagle Scout recognition. Even little Isaac LaLonde joined in the action for the capsize drill. It was great fun!
